encore's independent study program

For students enrolled in Encore's full time independent study program, there are two separate ways that they can complete work based on the Covid-19 pandemic and how this global shutdown has changed the way education behaves.

Non-Covid Program:

  • Encore students that are enrolled in full time independent study are assigned an independent study coordinator.

    • The independent study (IS) coordinator has a caseload of about 25 full time students.

    • The IS coordinator completes IS contracts with the student each semester and creates an academic plan.

    • The IS coordinator sends messages home to parents and students each week detailing academic progress for the student.

    • The IS coordinator communicates with the credentialed teacher that is teaching/overseeing/tutoring the course(s) that the IS student is enrolled in.

    • The IS coordinator helps schedule in class observations, online peer tutoring, teacher tutoring, and on campus testing.

    • The IS coordinator proctors the weekly tests and on campus time the independent study student participates in.

  • Encore IS students are responsible for:

    • Logging on to class every school day.

    • Communicating with IS coordinator and teacher upon completion of work to be graded.

    • Coming to school once per week for 3 hours for tutoring and testing.

    • Maintaining academic progress according to the academic plan.

    • Communicating need and desire for tutoring or additional help.

For Encore's regular Independent Study program, students are enrolled in one semester course at a time and are required to complete a semester course every five weeks (one unit per week).  Students come on campus once a week for three hours to complete testing, projects, and get peer/teacher/coordinator tutoring or instruction.

Covid Program:

  • Encore students that are enrolled in a full time independent study program are assigned an independent study coordinator.

    • The IS coordinator helps schedule Zoom class observations, online peer tutoring, online teacher tutoring, and online testing.

    • The IS coordinator proctors the weekly tests and has a weekly online meeting via Zoom with the student regarding academic progress.

  • Encore IS students are responsible for:

    • Logging on to class every school day.

    • Communicating with IS coordinator and teacher upon completion of work to be graded.

    • Meeting with the IS coordinator online every week via Zoom.

    • Maintaining academic progress according to the academic plan.

    • Communicating need and desire for tutoring or additional help.

For Encore's Covid Independent Study program, students are enrolled in one semester course at a time and are required to complete a semester course every five weeks (one unit per week).  Students are required to log on every school day and take tests every week online.  They are also required to meet with their IS Coordinator once per week for a specific appointment about academic progress.

All Independent Study classes use online curriculum that is proctored and graded by a credentialed teacher.  Non-Covid program provides students come on campus to complete science labs in person.

Grading Online Coursework:

  • Any courses that a student is finishing online will not show up on the regular grading window (Aeries).

  • Students will receive written progress reports via email from their IS Coordinator at least every two weeks to show progress.

  • Upon completion of the online coursework, students will have the grade for that class added directly to their transcript.

  • When an update is made to the transcript, a copy of the updated transcript will be emailed to both the parent and the student.

The Encore Difference:

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM
In order to remain innovative in education, Encore is seeking to build all academic classrooms as technology based headquarters where courses can be scheduled and viewed by traditional, hybrid, and independent study students on and off campus.

TELEVISIONS:
Using the technology available for education, each classroom will be equipped with three separate television screens.

  • First television will be equipped for projections, like a Smart-Board

  • Second and third television will be equipped for real time viewing of what is being recorded or broadcast

  • Teachers will be required to pre record "emergency sub plans" so substitutes will be able to play a teacher's lesson plan in the absence of the teacher.

STREAMING TECHNOLOGY:
Using Zoom Technology, Encore will stream and record lectures given by teachers in every class.

  • Students enrolled in classes will receive periodic emails to let them know what lectures are coming up and when they can tune in to watch them live.

  • Students will be able to log in to the live feed to take part in real time to watch the lectures on their computers or on their smart TV from home.

  • For students that log in to the live feed, they will be able to ask questions in real time via chat. The teacher will assign an in class student to ask questions that come up from remote students.

  • Students would be able to log into streaming courses every time based on the recording schedule. They would also have the opportunity to log in to classes and lessons taught by more than one teacher.

RECORDED TECHNOLOGY:
Encore's teachers will download recorded sessions and make them available on their Google classrooms so students can rewatch or makeup missed classes.

  • Having most lectures uploaded to Google classrooms will give students the opportunity to view lectures out of class.

  • Students will be able to rewind lectures.

  • Students will be able to stop lectures.

  • Students will be able to replay lectures.

ENCORE'S YOUTUBE RECORDED DATABASE:

During the initial Covid-19 stay at home orders, Encore recorded all live sessions that were offered by teachers.  During the 20/21 school year, teachers and instructors will be able to use this recorded database (almost 3,000 classes were uploaded) for extra credit, sub plans, and homework help for students.

CULTURE AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENCORE INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS:

  • Students enrolled in Encore’s Hybrid or Independent Study programs get to experience the opportunity to drop into classes as they need.

  • Students can sign up to be a part of the arts programs

  • Encore’s ASB will invite IS and Hybrid students to take part in all Encore activities through daily announcements and special emails sent to their student email account.

  • Students have the opportunity to audition for productions, special projects, and teams that happen on the Encore campus. ALL TEAMS ARE OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS OF ENCORE: TRADITIONAL, HYBRID, OR INDEPENDENT STUDY.

  • Hybrid and IS students are also invited to take part in any and all field trips that they would qualify to attend and any and all on campus competitions.

  • IS Students are welcome to Friday rallies and special events like prom, graduation, carnival, festival, and the annual suicide prevention walk.

Getting Started:

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:

Encore’s Independent Study program gives students the opportunity to engage in an innovative academic program while living within the specific and various needs of students.  As an Independent Study Program Student, the following will happen to get started:

  1. Student and parent will meet with Encore’s Enrollment Manager to enroll in the school.  They will select independent study as the academic program at Encore.

  2. Once enrolled, student will meet with their school counselor to create an academic plan that will help the student achieve graduation during the Encore six year plan.

  3. Student will be assigned an Independent Study Coordinator that will help them with academic progress.

    1. Students will meet with their Independent Study Coordinator every week in person or via Zoom to get academic progress updates, pickup books, take tests, schedule labs, and talk about curriculum help that is needed.

    2. The Independent Study Coordinator will provide the student with a pacing plan for their academic schedule.

    3. Independent Study Coordinator will send emails to parents and students at least bi-weekly to document academic progress.

  4. A credentialed teacher in the appropriate subject will oversee and grade the courses that the IS student is enrolled in.

  5. IS students will take one to two classes at a time and will be required to finish one unit every week.  Students should complete a semester (5 units) every five weeks to make minimum academic progress.

    1. For the first class that is taken online, IS students are only allowed to take one course so they can establish their own routine for completing coursework in an online, independent study model.

  6. Students will record when they participate in a seat based class or come on campus, signed off by the IS Coordinator, teacher or classroom aide.

  7. Students will record when they log in to a streaming or recorded lecture.

  8. IS students are allowed to come on campus for seat based, traditional classes to gain additional help if available as a “Drop in” student if desired. (Not allowed if the student was placed on IS as a discipline action.)  IS Coordinators will coordinate tutoring, online, and in person help.

  9. IS students can opt to switch to a Hybrid program if they wish to take arts classes on campus in addition to IS courses.

  10. IS students will be encouraged to take Chemistry on campus to fulfill the A-G requirements.

ACCELERATED ACADEMIC PROGRESS:

Students enrolled in the Independent Study program at Encore can work at an accelerated progress rate and are able to work throughout the year on academic courses.  While students can only take up to two classes at a time, they can complete their units at an accelerated rate.  Students completing a course ahead of academic progress rates (less than five weeks for a semester class) can immediately enroll in the next course.  Students using break time (fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks) can also move through courses quicker.  Students working at an accelerated pace can graduate early and/or choose to take additional academic classes to make college applications more attractive.

LACK OF ACADEMIC PROGRESS:

Students enrolled in the Independent Study (Pre-Covid) are required to come on campus at least once a week for three hours to meet with their Independent Study Coordinator. Students opting for a full online program (no campus visits due to Covid) will be required to meet with their IS Coordinator once a week via Zoom and must show academic progress every week.

  • If a student is not making academic progress (at least one unit per week for full time IS), the student will then be required to come on campus twice per week for three hours to work in the independent study lounge and catch up.  They will have three weeks to catch up on their academic progress.

  • If after three weeks, the student is not making appropriate academic progress, they will be placed on academic probation and given three additional weeks to catch up on their academic progress.

ACADEMIC PROBATION

  • If placed on academic probation, the student will be required to contact their IS Coordinator via Remind every morning to check in.

  • The IS Coordinator will give the student the assignments that they need to complete that school day to get back on track.

  • After completion of the assignments given by the IS Coordinator, the student will Remind the IS Coordinator to let them know that they have made the appropriate academic progress.

  • The student will remain on Academic Probation for the period of one academic quarter or until they have regained the appropriate academic progress pace.

  • If the student fails to follow through on their academic probation, the student will be required to move from full time independent study to Hybrid study program.  If the student fails to make appropriate academic progress on the Hybrid study program, they will be enrolled in full time, seat-based programs.

Please note, live stream starts about 10 minutes before the meeting starts.
