How will Encore determine reopening?

"Learning is non negotiable. Neither is Safety." - Governor Newsom

Governor Newsom's briefing on Friday, July 18 set and moreso reinforced the guidelines that were handed down to schools across the state in June. Thankfully, for the most part, Encore's COVID plan for the coming school year can stay in effect based on the announcements made on Friday. This is good news for Encore because there are very limited updates needed to the plan that was approved by Encore's School Board last Monday.

To see Encore's current Covid Planning, go to https://www.encoreedcorp.com/covid-19 and click on the COVID PLANNING pdf. Encore has created a 26 page document to help with the reopening of school this fall.

Encore's staff is going to continue to call families to confirm what program is best suited for your students for this fall. Encore is going to continue to move forward with the "Family Choice Model" with a couple caveats based on yesterday's Guidelines.

  1. Encore will be able to open when San Bernardino County is off of the monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. San Bernardino County is currently on the monitoring list, so we cannot start the count for consecutive days yet. (Remember Encore does not start until September 14th so we have time for this to happen.)

  2. Encore will add one provision to the current Covid Plan for Encore based on the guidelines released on Friday. This provision will call for all of Encore's staff to go into a rotation where they will be tested for Covid about every eight weeks. Encore plans testing to be done every week on a portion of the staff.

Right now, Encore staff is confirming what every family wants for their "Family Choice Model" program. This model allows for families to choose between four ways to get instruction on campus:

In the event that on the first day of school, September 14th, San Bernardino County is still not off the monitoring list and schools are not allowed to reopen, Encore will shift the "Family Choice Model" to the Most Restrictive Model: "CDC Required Complete School Closure Model." This model will be put into place based on family's program choices and will stay in effect until Encore can return to the "Family Choice Model." Encore's "CDC Closure Model" is as follows:

ENCORE IS AHEAD OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT CURVE

The briefing on Friday with Governor Newsom really reinforced the steps that Encore has already taken to make sure that everyone is prepared for school this fall.

Things that Encore has already implemented that are now a state requirement:

  1. All students are required to have a learning device.

  2. Teachers and students have to meet every school day online to make sure rigorous teaching is happening.

  3. SPED and EL considerations need to be made to make sure education is equitable.

  4. Distance Learning will be done at least partially online.

Health and Safety implementations that are already implemented at Encore that are now a state requirement:

  1. Masks must be worn.

  2. Temperature checks must be done upon entry.

  3. Hand sanitizing must be done throughout the day.

  4. Social Distancing must be exercised.

What else is Encore doing this summer to make sure that we continue to be innovative?

  1. Health & Safety - Encore is removing the old drinking fountains and replacing them with water bottle fillers.

  2. Health & Safety - Encore is building outside classroom spaces so teachers can teach outside when weather permits.

  3. Academics - Encore is building new online classroom platforms that work with the existing online curriculum to make it more interactive, engaging and thorough to help students connect to their academic curriculum.

  4. Academics - Encore's new curriculum platform will allow for students to take classes on different devices, including their smartphones for convenience (even though Encore already checks out Chromebooks to every student enrolled.)

  5. Positive Reinforcement - With Encore's new curriculum platform, students will be able to earn, download, share, and print certificates when they complete courses and course units.

  6. Career Technical Education - Encore is adding online CTE courses so students can continue to prepare for life after high school in careers and college readiness.

  7. Counseling - Encore's counseling department will continue to offer weekly online sessions for social and emotional well being of the students.

  8. College Readiness - Encore's counseling department will offer weekly online sessions to make sure that students know how to prepare for college admissions so they do not miss deadlines.

Encore is pleased that we are ahead of the curve as we venture into the new school year. As of today, Encore is still planning to implement the "Family Choice Model" on September 14. As we get closer to that day, we suggest watching the daily news to find out if/when San Bernardino County gets off of the monitoring list for the state. While it feels like our hands are tied in this situation, the best way for all of us to help get back to school in September is to help our friends and family understand that we should all try to:

- Wear a Mask

- Wash Your Hands

- Social Distance

- Monitor Your Own Health

- Don't Touch Your Face

I think we are all done with the neverending "snow days" or being "grounded." Let's work together to make it back to the first day of school as we all plan/want to. Thank you for caring and being a part of Encore's back to school plan.
