After getting feedback from parents and students regarding the workload of these two courses, I did a deeper dive so we can help our students succeed.
As I have said in prior emails, these classes are tied to the arts lab classes to help make sure that our kids are ready to start working after high school with a variety of tools, whether or not they are pursuing arts as a career. The complaint has been that this class is too taxing and too much work, so I asked the teaching staff to give me insight to what is what and when it is due so I can share this with all of our parents. In general, the students are assigned one assignment per week from this course. Most of the assignments are short.
Semester 1: Timeline Unit 1 - 4
September 21 - 25: Unit 1: Overview through Curriculum Standards for CTE level 1 (13 questions)
Sept 28 – Oct 2: Unit 1: UCLA Department of Design Media Arts video through Career Pathways: Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway (1 question)

Dec 14 – Dec 18: Unit 3: Career Planning Road Maps through How can you use technology to plan your future? (1 question)
Jan 4 – Jan 8: Unit 3: Practice Quiz and Unit 3: Final Quiz
Jan 11 – Jan 15: Unit 4: Overview through Googling Ethically (1 question)
Jan 18 – Jan 22: Unit 4: The Secret to a Successful Introduction Letter video to Introduction Letter
Jan 25 – Jan 29: Unit 4: Plagiarism Quiz and Unit 4: Final Quiz
Feb 1 – Feb 5: Complete any unfinished unit work
This timeline is the same for the Fashion, Interior Design Course and the Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation Class. Students that may have more than one of these Level I class should cut and paste the work from one course to the next and then tweak the responses based on the lab course it accompanies because the 11 anchor standard units are almost identical from course to course.
Once the students complete these courses, they will have tools to build a resume, know how to research a career and plan life after high school.
I hope that this information and this workload timeline is helpful for everyone.
