Class of 2020: Graduating Mural Design

As a visual artist, being able to share your creativity with the world in a meaningful way is a satisfaction that cannot be explained. The Class of 2020 had a lot of roadblocks to face along their winding road to graduation, but there are two things that hold true -

1. They will have amazing stories to tell their grandchildren someday.

2. They have built up resilience and a way to communicate even through social distancing.

In a world gone crazy, being able to cover walls with beautiful artwork will help people remember how to be thankful and discover beauty.

Mural design is a popular business, especially in concrete jungle cities across the world. If an artist can design a great mural and translate it onto their medium well, it can become the backdrop for selfies and go viral. There are billions of people in the world and billions of ideas of what beautiful is, but if you can strike a cord with a group of people with your artwork, you can create a career from it.

Artists that get involved in mural design can earn from $1,000 - $100,000 per mural that is created. Businesses and cities alike are always looking for new artistic installations. When an artist can combine their talent with a business mind, they can break into a world where they can spend their life getting their hands dirty with the colors of paint.

Mural Design programs essentially teach students how to create on a large scale canvas with varied textures and also how to turn their art into a business. To build a successful career, artists need to know how to combine both business and art.

Encore High School in southern California is offering a career training opportunity this fall for visual artists specifically in mural design. Encore offers a variety of career arts programs for students that want to pursue their creativity as a career after high school. Students interested in visual and technical arts have the ability to pursue mural design, sculpture and installation, photography, costume design, and film. Encore also has an art crew that builds special projects each year in conjunction with Encore's production department.

Field trips out of the area including beaches, zoos, museums, and parks help inspire young artists. Encore is dedicated to the pursuit of extended arts projects.

The artist pictured here, Angie Galvez, is a member of the class of 2020 from Encore High School. She is a "Six Year" (this is a term coined at Encore for students that attend school 7th through 12th grade like Harry Potter) and has devoured the arts programs available to her. Although visual art, especially painting, is her "home conservatory" she also lettered in Theatre and Vocal Music. This young lady is a triple threat.

Encore's Mural Design program is a part of the Career Technical Education programs offered at Encore and is an A-G approved course. Students can get involved in this program and take part in creating and painting a variety of murals throughout the school year. Their paint will leave a lasting impression on the world and the work knowledge will leave a lasting impression on the artist.
