Encore Celebrates Black History Month

Encore's ESG (Encore Student Government) invites the Encore community to celebrate Black History Month.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Join Encore in Celebrating Black History Month! We will be posting on social media daily, sending out emails with resources and information, and hosting special presentations all month long honoring Black Americans who have made a difference in the world we live in today. Follow us on Social Media where we will be highlighting students, leaders, small businesses, Equality movements, under-acknowledged members of the Black community and much more.
