Helping Students Become Employee Candidates - Encore Career Development

What establishes someone’s choice of a career as a good one? There is not a “one size fits all” response to this question. If you do a Google search on how to find the right career, you can get over 5 billion results on the subject in less than half a second. Since there are 7.8 billion people in the world, this means that there is a singular idea for every single adult on the planet on how to pick a career. That is overwhelming.

Couple that with young people are expected to know exactly what they want to do before they graduate from high school at 18 years old. The idea of choosing a career in the biggest growing years of your life seems absurd. For these reasons, Encore High School has a focus on teaching young people grades 7 - 12 how to acquire traits that will make them great candidate employees and lifelong students to insure success after high school.

According to Concordia University, there are six key traits that make a candidate employee stand out above others in a sea of resumes and applications:

Leadership Skills - Employers want to hire people that look like they could have longevity in their company to boost workplace productivity.

Organizational Skills - When a person is organized, that builds efficiency in the workplace.

Communication Skills - It is imperative that an employee is well spoken and well written. An employee is the face of a brand.

Intelligence - Employers need to feel confident that their employees are going to have the emotional intelligence to grow with the times and be open to learn new things.

Active Listening - This is a key ingredient to becoming successful. As a candidate employee, you need to be able to listen and “catch on” to tasks and directions quickly. This results in efficient and accurate work product.

Work Ethic - A strong work ethic means that a candidate will work hard, be honest, and have ambition. These are traits that have to be learned over time and are the key to long term relationships and job placement in the future.

An educational culture that grows these top six traits for successful employee candidates is easily rooted in a creative arts education. Encore builds these lifelong traits for student and career success through the highly engaging arts programs on both campuses.

While students of Encore are attending junior high and high school, they are constantly earning achievements, completing projects, and showing off their completed work. Through internship programs in office and teaching jobs, students can earn valuable work experience and letters of recommendation that they can give to their candidate employers. There are also several career technical education completer course studies that students can work to achieve graduation recognition and certification.

Encore's Career Technical Education Completer courses are available in these seven CTE strands:

  1. Fashion and Interior Design

  2. Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation

  3. Business and Finance

  4. Arts, Media, and Entertainment

  5. Information and Communication Technologies

  6. Education, Child Development, and Family Services

  7. Marketing, Sales, and Services

Students should be working to graduate from high school A-G ready for college and CTE certificated for the workplace environment. Encore helps students prepare for both.
