New Spanish Curriculum

Encore is very excited to be adopting new curriculum this school year. Our Spanish department has been researching digital resources for Spanish curriculum for the last three years with no luck finding a curriculum that met their classroom needs. This year, Encore will be updating Spanish curriculum to use of the "Somos" curriculum, including the digital classrooms that are provided with a license purchase.

Mr. Waggoner, who has been with Encore since 2011, is very excited to be updating curriculum and said that there is so much to offer in this new curriculum "Somos." Encore will be using the back half of "Somos Level 1" (Level 1 is a two-year course) and "Somos Level 2" for Mr. Waggoner's Spanish II classes starting this school year.

Ms. Urrea, who has been with Encore since 2017, is also excited about the curriculum update. She will continue to use the curriculum purchased last year for Encore's "AP Spanish Language and Culture" course, but will be using the front half of "Somos Level 1" for the Spanish I classes.

Encore uses a variety of digital curriculum to help make sure that the students are supported in an online world. Even before Covid, Encore had been updating curriculum to make sure that we could get as many textbooks out of the backpack as possible. (Remember when we were all concerned about the 50 pound backpacks?) Encore moved to one to one technology two years ago and has been using digital curriculum for five years already.

Admittedly, it was nice to be ahead of the game with digital platforms when Covid shut down the world in March. Instead of trying to "catch up" this summer, Encore has been laser focused on updating and perfecting the digital platforms for the students.

How will curriculum work this fall?

First, all of the classes will have a landing page on encorestudent.com (not uploaded quite yet). This landing page will describe the course and will be where the students can complete most of their Encore homework. For the courses, like Spanish, that have other digital curriculum, the landing course site will prompt the students where to go and in what order. Teachers will release new sections of the course as they are teaching it during class and students will receive a certificate that they can print and share every time they complete a unit in a class. Students can also gain badges on the site that award them for engagement in school.

This listing is simplified as Encore has over 130 courses in the course catalog. All arts classes have a digital platform that is on encorestudent.com so all arts training can also continue regardless of what is happening with Covid. There is still a lot of work to be done as Encore's 130+ courses are being input into the encorestudent.com learning platform every day, but Encore is ready for the updates to the digital platforms that support learning for all students.
