As people joke about each month of 2020 being like a new level in Jumanji, how do you make sure that your kids are OK? Parents always want the best for their children and when we as humans are trying to figure out how to process the crazy that is coming to us every day as adults, it is hard to figure out how to take care of our kids at the same time.
It is OK to not be OK - Everyone may go through a process that looks like grieving as things are so overwhelming right now. Everything does not have to be OK. Your entire family needs time to process and work through the feelings that go with everything that is happening.
Try to keep normalcy - When the whole world feels like it is crumbling, it is critical to try to keep the parts that can be controlled as normal as possible. Even if it is something as simple as the family watches that special program every week, normal will help with stress and anxiety.
Answer Questions - The more your kids are kept in the dark, the more the anxiety will spread. Answers will vary according to your child's age, but it is important to respect their curiosity and their need to understand what is going on. Answering questions is important.
Listen - Listening to their concerns is just as big of a benefit as talking to your kids. When you listen to your children you can identify when they are having issues that are bigger than them. Communication is imperative to keeping your children emotionally and mentally healthy.
Seek Help - It is OK to recognize that your child may need more help than what you are equipped to give. If you find yourself needing additional help, reach out to school counselors (counselors@encorehighschoo.com) to get pointed in the right direction.
This is a very polarized time in our country. It is time for parents to keep an eye on their children and help them maneuver these rocky waters. They can become stronger as they wade through this time of uncertainty.
