Progress Report Grading Is This Friday

It is amazing how fast the clock ticks once school gets started. This Friday is the closing date for progress report grading. What this means is teachers are going to make parents aware if their child is failing a class. This is not the quarterly grade, but meant as the reminder that students need to be taking their grades (and their work) seriously so they can get a good grade on their report card. The feedback that I am getting from the teachers is that there is a population of students that are not doing any work outside of the Zoom sessions. As a result, we have a lot of students that are currently receiving failing grades in their classes.

When everyone came on campus to go to school, they would go into a classroom for 48 minutes as a junior high student and 90 minutes as a high school student. They would have an assignment "lecture" time with their teacher and then they would be expected to work on their own. They would then have up to 15 minutes of homework for junior high in their academic classes and up to 30 minutes of homework for high school academic classes every time they meet that class. Even though we are now learning remotely, the expectation is still the same.

Students should be logging in to their Zoom sessions with their teachers every day and should be on Zoom for about 30 minutes at the beginning of each class. At the conclusion of the 30 minute lesson, students should then continue with the lesson as "classwork" until it is time for the next class to start. They should then have "homework" at the end of the regular school day. This is true for all of Encore's academic classes. While a lot of students have swung back into the routine, a lot of students have not.

This progress report this week will help give students that need the "wake up call" the wake up call. There is still time to improve grades before the end of the quarter, but students really need to take the classes seriously and with fidelity.

There is still no return date for students that chose either "traditional" or "Hybrid" to return to campus. San Bernardino is still slated in purple and will not be able to reopen schools until our county is in red. Last week, the town of Apple Valley submitted a plea to the governor explainng that San Bernardino county is the largest county in the country and in fact covers the same square footage of about 20 of the counties in Northern California for Governor Newsom lives. They want San Bernardino to be able to break down into regions so we can reopen San Bernardino economy. In a news report on CBS this morning, Dr. Fauci said that we need to get schools back open because they are not the superspreaders that we originally thought they would be.... as long as the schools are careful.

Today is Tuesday, which means that the county numbers will be updated today. I will give you an update to progress in tomorrow's blog. Stay healthy, stay safe, wear a mask..... and, do you homework!

Have a great week pirates!
