The Topic of the Week: Student Engagement

As the quarantine and stay at home orders continue throughout the state of California, Encore's teachers (and teachers everywhere really) are struggling with keeping students engaged to distance learning. When teachers went to college to become an educator, none of them knew that they would be placed into a new frontier where they would be pushed out of the comfort zone of their classroom to teach.

With school now almost complete with the entire first semester, teachers and students are struggling to stay involved and engaged. The struggle of Zoom fatigue is real. Keeping our kids engaged with their creative and artistic brains can be even harder.

Every week, Encore's teachers meet in the morning before tutoring starts for the students. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays there are meetings with me (the CEO) to go over specific topics, questions, comments, and concerns that come up over the course of the week. One of the main topics of this week was how to re-engage students when they are tapping out of the Zoom world. We had some very creative ideas shared amongst the staff.

ESCAPE ROOMS - In science, one of our teachers engages their students by putting them into virtual escape rooms that the answers to their lessons help them escape the room.

AMONG US - In a few of our classes, teachers are using a platform that turns their lessons into stories in the video game "Among Us." This has helped with student engagement and can be completed both synchronously and asynchronously.

BREAKOUT ROOMS - When the classes get to quiet and the students are not responding to teachers, a lot of Encore teachers will switch up the lesson and have the students break into smaller groups within Zoom so they can complete projects together. That way they can be together....apart.

VIRTUAL AUDITION DAY - Tomorrow, the arts departments will be hosting our annual BIG AUDITION DAY virtually so students can engage in the building of productions for second semester.

Auditions will be held for "Coraline", "School of Rock", and "She Kills Monsters" from 12:30 - 4:00 pm

We know this is hard. Hang in there pirates. This is making us stronger.
